Japanese simplicity merges with Danish carpentry traditions in the Tsugi shelf – now introduced in a shorter version
Designers Sharon Fisher and Matteo Barenghi have created the Tsugi Shelf, which unites solid teak, oak and brass in a simple, understated design. This shorter version of the shelf, which can be mounted alone or in groups, is more versatile than ever. The discreet groove milled into the shelf secures picture frames and books firmly in place and keeps them from sliding.
The shelf’s Japanese name, Tsugi, refers to the method of craftsmanship in which the shelf and wall mount are firmly interlocked by a brass peg. This traditional form of joinery was developed in 12th-century Japan to keep the wood as intact as possible by not using nails. Not only does the Tsugi joint firmly stabilise the shelf, it also infuses a distinctive detail into the design.

Interior architect and designer Sharon Fisher and architect Matteo Barenghi started their Danish-Italian collaboration across borders in 2008. Since then, the two architects and designers have created timeless pieces with a significant focus on quality. The focal points of the design duo are the search for natural simplicity and the fascination with suitable materials and skilled craftsmanship.
