Hans J. Wegner’s CH621 Swivel Chair from 1948 is Relaunched by Carl Hansen & Søn as the First Swivel Chair in the Collection. The Chair Attests to Wegner’s Unique Ability to Strike a Balance Between Aesthetics and Ergonomics.
Often referred to as ‘Master of the Chair’, Hans J. Wegner created almost 500 in his lifetime, making him one of Denmark’s most creative, innovative and productive designers of all time. Though his extensive portfolio, Wegner only created a few swivel chairs, all of them being highly coveted collectors’ pieces today. One of these, the CH621 Swivel Chair, is now available to design enthusiasts around the world – more than 75 years after it was originally released.
The Swivel Chair has an industrial design idiom, blending a sleek, brushed-steel frame softened by the oak, fabric and leather details of the chair’s seat, arm and backrest. The height of the original version of the chair has been adjusted using a spindle, requiring the user to rotate the seat to achieve their desired height. For a more user-friendly design, the spindle has been replaced with an easy-to-use height-adjustment lever operating a modern gas lift cylinder. In addition, the relaunched chair is equipped with five castors, instead of the original four, to comply with modern stability requirements. Custom castors made of brushed steel provide the finishing touch to the industrial aesthetic.
Hans J. Wegner was one of Denmark’s first mid-century designers to focus on ergonomics, in addition to form and function. He collaborated with doctors and physiologists to develop a chair with ideal lumbar support and sitting posture, and he continued to do so throughout his career. This explains why the various angles and inclines recur as recognisable features in many of Wegner’s designs.
Today, Carl Hansen & Søn is the largest manufacturer of Hans J. Wegner furniture and lamps. Knud Erik Hansen, CEO and third generation owner of Carl Hansen & Søn, states: “Hans J.
