Carl Hansen & Søn presents The Radio House Mirror design by Vilhelm Lauritzen

THE RADIO HOUSE MIRROR WAS DESIGNED BY VILHELM LAURITZEN IN 1945 EXCLUSIVELY FOR THE ROYAL RETIRING ROOM AT THE RADIO HOUSE IN COPENHAGEN. CARL HANSEN & SON IS NOW RELEASING THE MIRROR IN COLLABORATION WITH VILHELM LAURITZEN ARCHITECTS.

Vilhelm Lauritzen (1894-1984) designed the Radio House Mirror for the Royal Retiring Room in the Radio House which served as the royal chambers connected to the royal box. The Royal Retiring Room is an all-encompassing work of art – all its furniture was designed by Lauritzen specifically for the room. The Radio House Mirror is a 175 cm high full-length mirror, and is now being made available for the first time.

Knud Erik Hansen, CEO and third-generation owner-manager of Carl Hansen & Son, says: “We started collaborating with Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects with the launch of the Foyer Series from the Radio House in 2022, and it was during a visit to the Radio House that we noticed the beautiful mirror which perfectly matches Carl Hansen & Son’s portfolio of Danish design. The mirror has never before been available to a wider audience, so we’re thrilled to be adding it to our collection.”

The mirror has a clear Vilhelm Lauritzen and Radio House identity, with the organic solid oak beautifully framing the mirror image. The distinctive frame is assembled with the utmost precision to ensure that the grain is continuous. The surface is then gently sanded by hand to achieve a complete finish.

Anne Møller Sørensen, partner at Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects, says: “The Radio House Mirror is a piece of furniture in its own right, and much more than just a surface. There is something almost baroque about the organic wood profile and the beautiful way in which it frames the mirror image. We’ve chosen to launch the mirror in oak to give it a Nordic contemporary look.”

The Radio House Mirror is suitable for both private homes and public spaces such as theatres, hotels, shops and retail areas in general.

ABOUT THE RADIO HOUSE
Vilhelm Lauritzen was one of the most important architects in Denmark and one of the trailblazers of Danish modernism. The Radio House counts as one of his best-known buildings, which was created for the Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR) back when radio represented the latest in modern technology. Today, the building is home to the Royal Danish Academy of Music. It is an internationally renowned site that showcases Lauritzen’s eminence at detailing and material awareness, as he designed all the fixtures and fittings from lamps and furniture to bannisters and door handles. Lauritzen worked with organic shapes and materials, which is clearly evident in the furniture of the Radio House, where everything finds its place in a single organic concept.
