Tactile and intuitive: Verner Panton’s 80s Wire Stool transforms into a side table with marble addition
The Wire Stool captures Verner Panton’s affinity for geometric shapes, repeated patterns and wire construction. Originally designed in 1981 and re-introduced in 2024 by &Tradition, this multifunctional piece serves equally as chair or side table. A new solid marble tabletop add-on now bolsters its table credentials.
Precisely milled to follow the stool’s contours, the tabletop comes in Nero Marquina and Bianco Carrera marble variants, introducing additional tactility to Panton’s design. While contemporaries preferred wood, Panton explored industrial materials like steel wire, which became a recurring theme throughout his career.
“My father was perpetually immersed in the design process, always experimenting,” shares Carin Panton. “Wire was prized for its malleability. His mathematical ability, especially geometry, reflects throughout his furniture, textile, installations, and architecture works.”
The Wire Stool’s appeal lies in its adaptability. Without add-ons, it appears airy and transparent with mesmerizing concentric circles viewed from above. The lightweight wire construction enables stacking up to 12 stools, amplifying the optical effect of repeated linear leg motifs.
“The Wire Stool was a personal favourite of my father,” adds Carin. “He was drawn to its paradoxical nature – combining airy transparency with structural integrity. The harmonious stacked effect particularly captivated him.”
With the marble tabletop, four elegant legs support marble weight while maintaining visual lightness through conservative 2cm thickness. The tabletop joins four existing foam-filled seat pad variants in blue, red, green and grey. Concealed plastic attachment points protect both marble and stainless steel while enabling easy transformation between typologies.
The Wire Stool suits private homes, hotels, bars, museums, restaurants and contract settings, solidifying its status as an all-round design icon.
