Bruno Mathsson Prize 1996 to Ejnar Pedersen
This year’s Bruno Mathsson Prize goes to one of Danish carpentry craftsmanship’s great masters and renewers, master carpenter Ejnar Pedersen.
That the prize this time is awarded to a furniture carpenter can be seen as a recognition of carpentry craftsmanship’s importance for quality in Nordic furniture design and furniture production and a recognition of craftsmanship’s importance for product development in collaboration with the designer.
The Mathsson Foundation’s Nordic scholarship council motivates the choice in the following way: “Ejnar Pedersen has in a personal way conveyed the qualities of carpentry craftsmanship and developed a close collaboration with some of Denmark’s best furniture architects, Poul Kjærholm and Hans Wegner. He has thereby renewed and refined this Danish collaboration tradition and during a long career enriched Danish interior culture with a number of classic furniture pieces.”
The Mathsson Prize, 100,000 kronor, is presented at a ceremonial event on April 26 in the Concert Hall at the Louisiana Museum in Humlebæck, Denmark, by the Secretary General of the Nordic Council of Ministers Pär Stenbäck. The presentation takes place in the presence of Mrs. Karin Mathsson and the prize winner will be presented by Professor Vilhelm Wohlert.
In connection with Scandinavian Furniture Fair 96 in Copenhagen, an exhibition about Ejnar Pedersen and about the donor himself, Professor Bruno Mathsson, opens at Martbroen in Bella Center. It is 60 years in April since Bruno Mathsson had his debut exhibition at the Röhsska Museum of Design and Crafts in Gothenburg. The exhibition at Bella Center has been built by architect MAA Marinane Wegner Sörensen and is shown from April 24 to the middle of August this year.
