Arne Jacobsen, architect and designer – would have turned 100 this year
2002 marks the centenary of the birth of Arne Jacobsen. To commemorate this event Fritz Hansen and Louis Poulsen will launch a limited and numbered Centenary Package. The package will be available as a complete set and only for a 100-day period, starting on Arne Jacobsen’s 100th birthday February 11, 2002.
The Arne Jacobsen Centenary Package from Louis Poulsen and Fritz Hansen consists of:
• An egg-shaped, three-legged table with a thin top in black lazured ash veneer on angled chromed steel legs.
• 3 three-legged Ant chairs in black lazured laminated, moulded ash veneer with chromed steel legs.
• A Stelling pendant with shade in blown opal three-layered glass.
THE BACKGROUND
Arne Jacobsen is one of the most renowned Danish architects and designers of the time. World acclaimed for his buildings, applied art and product design for cutlery, furniture and lighting fixture designs.
Arne Jacobsen’s designs are genuinely timeless. His product designs are today – 30, 40, 50 years after the creation – more popular than ever. His products are used wherever people live and work. In public and private spheres alike, and they are seen on the covers of international fashion and trend magazines, in movies, music videos and television series, and they are exhibited worldwide in leading design museums.
Fritz Hansen and Louis Poulsen each has a comprehensive collection of Arne Jacobsen’s furniture and lighting fixture design, and we therefore found it natural to join forces in offering two unique Arne Jacobsen designs as a special package which is offered for a 100-day period only in the anniversary year.
EGG-SHAPED TABLE
The same year Arne Jacobsen designed the Ant – in 1952 he also designed a small egg-shaped table for the chair. This would turn out to be his most unique table design obviously with three legs like his favourite chair the Ant. The table is light and elegant design with the distinctive egg-shaped black lazured table top and is a perfect match for the minimalist Ants. In contrast to the Ant the table was only in production from 1952-1960.
STELLING PENDANT
The Stelling pendant was designed in 1937 for Stelling’s House on Gammel Torv in Copenhagen. The elegant and minimalist pendant has a shade of three-layered blown opal glass. The glass bottom plate that conceals the light source emanates soft, comfortable lighting for the surroundings.
The limited numbered Centenary Package is a perfect example of the width of Arne Jacobsen’s genius as an architect and designer. A unique ensemble for the design conscious user.
Arne Jacobsen (1902-1971)
graduated in 1927 as an architect from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. At 23 years of age he won a silver medal at the world exhibition in Paris, and the year after he received the gold medal from the Academy. Arne Jacobsen later became professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts and an honorary doctor at a number of foreign universities and academies.
Arne Jacobsen has inscribed his name in the design as well as architectural history. His main works include: the Bellevue at Klampenborg, the Town Halls in Århus, Søllerød, Rødovre and Glostrup, the Royal Hotel in Copenhagen, St. Catherine’s College in Oxford, the Danish Central Bank in Copenhagen, Novo Nordisk headquarters in Gladsaxe and in Copenhagen as well as the Town Hall in Mainz, Germany.
Arne Jacobsen’s cooperation with Louis Poulsen and Fritz Hansen respectively dates back to the beginning of the 30s. He designed a number of chairs for Fritz Hansen, which are milestones in the development of modern furniture art: the Ant (1952), the 3107 (1955), Series 3300 (1958), the Egg, Swan and Swan Sofa (1958). Arne Jacobsen also designed groundbreaking lighting solutions, e.g. the AJ Series and Munkegaard for Louis Poulsen.
