Design Heritage
The Baltic Exhibition in Malmö in 1914 left its mark on many different levels. One was the personal inheritance of a piece of furniture exhibited by master cabinet maker H. N. Nordén, and used and preserved within the family during the 100 years that have passed.
Designer Stefan Borselius exhibits his great grandfather’s furniture and deliberates over it in time for its 100th anniversary. How did heritage, talent and circumstance affect his choice of profession; what is the connection to the furniture, lamps and textiles he designs today?
The story of H. N. Nordéns furniture store sets the oak cupboard in its historical context, provides a brief retrospect of the Baltic Exhibition and presents a collection of Stefan Borselius designs.
Design Heritage describes the contrasts between a heavy piece of furniture that looks to the past and the innovative, light, forward-looking products of today.

“Möbelformgivaren Stefan Borselius morfars far Hans Nils Nordén var möbelsnickare och drev en möbelbutik i Malmö som hette H. N. Nordèns Möbelaffär. Hans Nils fick i uppdrag att rita ett möblemang till Baltiska utställningen 1914. Delar av möblemanget visas under sommaren på Form/Design Center i ackompanjemang av möbler som Stefan Borselius formgivit i nutid, 100 år senare. Utställningen belyser möbelformgivning från olika vinklar, formgivning i arv och möbeldesign under 1900-talets sekel.”

Stefan Borselius växte upp med morfarsfars linneskåp, en av flera möbler som möbelsnickareHans Nils Nordén lät förfärdiga till invigningen av Baltiska utställningen 1914. Stefan tänkte välja samma bana och avlade sitt gesällprov exakt 100 år efter morfarsfar, men möbelsnickeri var inte nog: Stefan lät vidareutbilda sig och är idag kanske en av Sveriges mest intressanta möbelformgivare.
Utställningen Formgivning i arv öppnar den 5:e juni och är egentligen två. Hans Nils Nordéns möblemang var ett av värdstaden Malmös bidrag när Baltiska utställningen öppnade med 1 700 utställare i Pildammsparken. Tillsammans med Danmark, Tyskland och Ryssland skulle Sverige visa upp det bästa och nyaste av kultur och teknik, men mitt under den storstilade utställningen utbröt första världskriget. Nordéns möbelsnickeri blickar bakåt och sammanfattar samtidens hantverksskicklighet. Stefan Borselius är som designer desto mer intresserad av att utforska framtiden och vår tids utmaningar. Till skillnad från formgivare med fokus på färg och form, går Stefan längre när han med fast förankring i det förflutna försöker göra möbler, belysning och textilier för nya livsstilar och nya arbetsmiljöer. Många av Borselius produkter visas i utställningen, och står i kontrast till Nordéns 100 år gamla möblemang.
Form/Design Center firar femtioårsjubileum och öppnar sina nyrenoverade lokaler med sommarens utställningar The Future is Handmade och Formgivning i arv.
