AN ANNIVERSARY EDITION OF THE CHINA CHAIR BY HANS J. WEGNER
Celebrating 80 years of cabinetmaking prowess with 80 collectible chairs.
To honour 80 years of meticulous craftsmanship, Fritz Hansen is releasing an exclusive edition of the China Chair by Hans J. Wegner in oiled European cherry with a Pure leather seat cushion. The China Chair holds a unique place in the Fritz Hansen collection, a cabinetmaker’s piece in continuous production since 1944.
Wegner was early in his career when he designed the first of four versions of the China Chair on a commission from Fritz Hansen to create affordable furniture that could be produced when materials were scarce. His response, inspired by an 18th century Chinese chair, was neither low cost nor easily made. But with the organic curve of its back and light frame, it was recognised as the classic it became, receiving accolades when it was shown in the Spring exhibition of the School of Arts and Crafts.
The China Chair set Wegner, a skilled cabinetmaker who played organically with his craft, on a path to becoming one of the most lauded proponents of Danish Modern, his name inscribed in the history of design. Wegner simultaneously created three further China Chairs, but the first was his favourite, more expressive and detailed than the other versions.
“The China Chair is one of the most refined chairs ever made in industrial production and having it in production continuously for 80 years is unique in a Danish context,” says Marie-Louise Høstbo, Creative Design Director, Fritz Hansen. “This chair is very special because it represents the cusp of Danish Modern. It is decorative and sculptural and embodies an exemplary manifestation of the design principles for which Wegner became so famous.”
More handcrafted in all respects, the China Chair is made from highest grade wood that is carefully selected so the grain is mirrored on both sides of the chair. To mark the 80th anniversary, the 80 chairs are being made in European cherry in the same labour-intensive way they have always been produced. Celebrating wood in a contemporary way, they are finished with oil to highlight the beauty of the grain. This understated treatment is complemented by the natural tactility of the Pure leather used for the seat cushion, which will become more beautiful over time.
Released in 2024, each chair is numbered and only 80 will be produced.

This is a collector’s piece honouring the original as well as being our take on what’s special about our time.” says Høstbo.
