Vilhelm Lauritzen’s Iconic Radio House Foyer Bench Gets Compact Update – Carl Hansen & Søn

Carl Hansen & Søn Foyer Bench shorter version showcasing elegant hospitality design

Carl Hansen & Søn Launches a Shorter Version of Vilhelm Lauritzen’s Foyer Bench. Originally Designed Exclusively for the Radio House in Copenhagen, the Bench Unites a Simple Design Idiom with Sublime Craftsmanship.

Designed by Vilhelm Lauritzen and opening its doors in Copenhagen in 1945, the Radio House remains one of the finest examples of Danish functionalism to this day. In addition to the buildings, Lauritzen designed the entire interior, from door handles to chandeliers. For the vestibule of the main building, he designed the elegant Foyer Series, comprising a bench, sofa and armchair. Carl Hansen & Søn launched the series in collaboration with Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects in 2022. The series is now being enlarged to include a shorter version of the bench, which is just as ideal for private homes as it is for restaurants and hotels.

The slender, solid oak frame of the Foyer Bench is fitted with a sumptuous seat upholstered in either fabric or leather. The frame is meticulously joined with classic tenon joints and has been hand-polished by the skilled craftspeople at Carl Hansen & Søn’s Danish factory to provide a silky smooth wood surface without noticeable transitions. The double-stitched seat upholstery is made by hand and exudes exclusive simplicity, with handmade piping cord and buttons.

“We’re thrilled to enhance our Vilhelm Lauritzen collection with this new bench, whose more modest dimensions will make it easier to find its way into private homes, restaurants and hotels. The simple, subdued aesthetic of Lauritzen’s Foyer Bench merges with Carl Hansen & Søn’s masterful craftsmanship and exquisite materials.”
– Knud Erik Hansen, CEO and third generation owner-manager of Carl Hansen & Søn

THE RADIO HOUSE

  • The Radio House in Copenhagen was designed by architect Vilhelm Lauritzen
  • Construction began in 1936 and lasted until 1945
  • The building complex is a listed, internationally acclaimed “Gesamtkunstwerk” (ideal work of architectural art), and Vilhelm Lauritzen designed all the furniture and lamps specifically for the Radio House
  • The Radio House was originally designed as a centre for the Danish Broadcasting Corporation, but now houses the Royal Danish Academy of Music
  • Vilhelm Lauritzen was deeply inspired by nature, and the pure, organic shapes can be sensed in his works – exemplified by the curved elegance of the Foyer Series and the organic wooden profile of the Radio House Mirror
  • Lauritzen’s unique sense for functional aesthetics is embodied by his choice of exclusive materials, such as brass, teak, cowhide leather and Greenland marble
  • The Foyer Series still adorns the lobby of the iconic Radio House to this day
