Vaarnii expands Ronan Bouroullec’s Maasto collection at 3 Days of Design 2025 with dining tables, bar stools, and Kvadrat-upholstered seating. The Finnish brand introduces black-stained finish options alongside natural pine. Combining solid wood and custom plywood, Maasto represents innovative Scandinavian design celebrating pine’s natural character. Available in multiple sizes, the collection bridges intimate and commercial dining environments with brutal honesty and sophisticated craftsmanship.

Finnish furniture brand Vaarnii has unveiled significant expansions to its acclaimed Maasto collection, designed by renowned French designer Ronan Bouroullec, at 3 Days of Design 2025 in Copenhagen. The collection, which represents an innovative fusion of solid Finnish pine and custom-developed plywood, now includes dining tables, bar stools, and upholstered seating options featuring Kvadrat fabric.

Originally launched in 2024 with the 016 Maasto Dining Chair and Dining Armchair, the collection has quickly established itself as a cornerstone of contemporary Scandinavian design. Bouroullec’s vision for Maasto—meaning “back to earth” in Finnish—embodies a brutally honest approach to pine furniture that celebrates rather than conceals the natural characteristics of this quintessentially Nordic material.

Bouroullec’s design philosophy for Maasto centers on the revolutionary combination of solid wood and plywood construction. “There are a lot of good reasons for mixing solid wood and plywood in the Maasto range,” the designer notes, citing practical considerations of logistics, material stability, and pricing. Yet he emphasizes that beyond these technical advantages, “Maasto has a quality that I love but can’t explain. It is difficult to do something new with wooden furniture and this is new.”

Vaarnii’s approach to pine furniture challenges conventional expectations of wood aging. Rather than viewing dents, bruises, and color variations as flaws, the brand encourages customers to embrace these natural developments. Pine’s characteristic evolution from pale tones to deep honey hues, combined with the different aging rates of heartwood and sapwood, creates unique patina patterns that make each piece increasingly distinctive over time.
