Tool, an adjustable side table by Studio Irvine

The idea of an adjustable side table that could accompany you in your everyday life, was born in 2011 when James Irvine and Offecct met to discuss future projects. We are very glad to say that we now in 2015 have succeeded in finishing what was named Tool. This is a versatile table for the digital age in which people have been freed from their work desks, a table that can easily connect to any type of furniture or person no matter the situation.

– I always knew when James had fallen asleep by the thud of the telephone landing on the floor. Every night the same story. He would have liked an extendable bedside table on which to put his phone, glasses or book. When watching a film stretched out on the sofa, we never wanted to get up to eat. We would have liked two height adjustable table-trays for a plate and glass, a bottle of wine and the remote. When in our studio, we often need an extension for our conference table: a support top to put a cup of coffee on or do sketches on, that would adapt to the height of one’s chair. And that’s how James came up with the idea of a table that would come to your aid at different moments of everyday life, explains Marialaura Rossiello Irvine // Studio Irvine.

During the process of realizing Tool, the appearance from the original sketches has slightly changed but with the idea very much intact. Making Tool as user friendly as possible with no visible mechanics has been the priority. While some of the dimensions have been reduced, the challenge of creating a lever with a smooth reaction has been worked out to great satisfaction.

– For me, this has been a very important project to complete and I think we have really come close to the original idea of the table. says Marialaura Rossiello Irvine // Studio Irvine.

– We are very proud to have finalized the development of Tool, which we began working on with James Irvine and his colleagues in Studio Irvine several years ago. The collaboration with Studio Irvine has meant something special for us, since there is both a strong relationship and a historical background with James Irvine. We are now working on exciting new projects with Studio Irvine, says Offecct CEO Kurt Tingdal.
