The process of brass casting was the departure point for creating Solid – a wall lamp resilient to the outdoor elements, echoing nautical influences and the architectural expression of Space Copenhagen.

Solid is a welcome addition to &Tradition’s expanding foray into outdoor offerings. The collection facilitates the focus, function and flow of outdoor space with a robust yet refined design, equally able to enhance the ambiance inside.

Solid’s bell-shaped silhouette is a maritime motif which conjures imagery of oceanic experiences. Associations that add dimension to a simple, stalwart lamp imbued with Space Copenhagen’s architectural DNA.

“We loved the idea of pursuing a solid cast in one material,” note Space Copenhagen founders Signe Bindslev Henriksen and Peter Bundgaard Rützou. “That was the premise for this project. The casting process allowed us to start with a minimal, organic shape, without extraneous components. And without compromising on the simplicity and soft silhouette we were seeking. Growing up in Scandinavia, weather is a factor that permeates many areas of life, so we wanted the lighting to be as solid and resistant to water as possible. We looked to the maritime universe, as we’ve always been fascinated by nautical accoutrements, where the ability to endure the elements is an imperative.”

Solid comes in one of two variants, each of which have been specially developed for different environments. The SC104 can be used both indoors and outdoors and comes in a classic Black, while the SC105 has been specifically designed for outdoor use only and comes in a Bronzed Brass – a finish that leaves an impression of natural weathering. The lamp is easy to disassemble and the glass is available as a spare part for re-order.

Solid suggests a subdued sophistication that makes it suitable for a wide spectrum of outdoor and indoor environments.

For use outdoors, the Black or Bronzed Brass variants serves as a focused light to draw attention to architectural features, or as a guiding light for transitional areas. Use Solid to highlight a rooftop terrace or pool-side setting. Arrange several fixtures to illuminate the path to a private garden, the exterior of a building, or throughout the landscape of a resort.

Indoors, the Black Solid variant provides a warm welcome at an entrance, a guide down a hotel hallway, or mood setter in a private residence. A softer, diffused effect can be created by changing the clear glass to opaque.

In its appearance, Solid has an enduring attribute that attests to the materiality of Bronzed Brass. As Henriksen and Rützou see it, “There’s a certain poetry and magic to the subtle change in Bronzed Brass, as if it’s somehow receptive to the imprint of time. Witnessing brass age gracefully over time is a design tenet intrinsic to our Danish heritage. It’s in keeping with our desire to celebrate the slowness of the small things that surround us, especially in the fast-paced world in which we find ourselves.”
