Light Houses – Young Nordic Architecture

15 October 2013 – 16 February 2014

LIGHT HOUSES is an extended version of the joint nordic exhibition produced for the Venice architecture bienale 2012. It gives a view of young Nordic architecture and at the same time highlights the challenges facing architects worldwide right now; social, economic and enviromental.

The original exhibition took both the 50-year jubilee of Sverre Fehns nordic pavillion in Venice and the bienales general theme, ”common ground” as it’s point of departure. Before the exhibition, a sculpture set of 32 finnish, swedish and norwegian architects, born after the pavillons year of inception 1962. The set would constitute the essence of the architectural firms philosophy and att the same time, explicity be in tune with Sverre Fehns modernist pavillion building. These sculptural pieces represents a coherent part of the exhibition.

At the Swedish Centre of Architecture and Design Light Houses is supplemented by works and and in depth information about these 32 architects and firms. We particularily focus the eleven Swedish contributions, presented with new texts and an application that encourage the visitor to experience the latest of contemporary Swedish architecture on a 1:1 scale in the city, in real life.

The Exhibition is produced by The Finnish Museum of Architecture, as the co-nordic contribution to the Venice bienale 2012. Light Houses is curated by Peter MacKeith, professor of architecture at Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts, Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri.
