Jonas Lindvall

“I believe that we live under some kind of resonance law. Surroundings, rooms, furniture and things – they all have an effect on us. In this play, that is our life, the stage has to agree with the way we want to feel – but also affect the way we feel.”

Jonas Lindvall

Jonas Lindvall was educated as an interior architect in Gothenburg, Sweden and studied furniture design both at the Royal College of Arts in London and Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. Upon completing his studies he returned to his hometown, Malmö, were he opened his own office. His commissions have been many and diverse. As an architect, Lindvall has designed everything from private villas and apartments to shop, restaurant and hotel interiors. As a designer, his portfolio ranges from home accessories to kitchens and bathrooms.

Restaurants
Jonas designed his first restaurant interior in 1993. Almost 20 years later, the interior of Malmö’s Koi restaurant remains for the most part, untouched, standing as a testament to the timeless appeal of his work. In 2007 the architect garnered much attention for the interior design of Malmö’s top fine dining restaurant, Bloom in The Park. With its dramatic interior, which evokes the opulence of baroque in a contemporary setting, Bloom in The Park is as known for its design as it is for its world-class gastronomy. Jonas is currently working on his latest restaurant project, Gastrologik, based in the Swedish capital. Thanks to its line-up of star chefs; Jacob Holmström and Anton Bjuhr, and of course its contemporary, elegant design, Gastrologik is set to become one of the hottest destinations on the Stockholm dining scene when it opens in October 2011.

Industrial design
As a furniture designer, Jonas Lindvall has created many prize-winning pieces, among them the Oak chair, which was awarded “Furniture of the year award” in 2001. In 2004, Wallpaper magazine listed him as one of three “wise buys” – one of the most collectible furniture designers of the future. He has also received the “Excellent Swedish Design award” no less than four times and the “Golden Chair award” for best interior 2004, all presented by the Swedish association of Architects. In February 2011, Lindvall took Elle Decoration Sweden’s Kitchen Designer of the Year award for his K2 kitchen, produced by Ballingslöv. In addition to his many laudits, Lindvall’s work has also been purchased by several museums in Sweden and internationally, including London’s Victoria and Albert museum as part of its permanent collection and the Mori Art Center in Tokyo.

Jonas Linvall is currently working on a revolutionary, injection-molded, lightweight chair for Swedish furniture manufacturer, Johanson Design. Shown as a prototype during the 2011 Milan Furniture Fair, the P77 chair, which is due to go into production by the end of the year, promises to be another star of the designer’s impressive collection of works.

Scenography
In recent years, Lindvall has added scenography to his diverse portfolio of projects. In 2009, Lindvall A&D created the backdrop to the critically acclaimed Dekadens exhibition at Dunkers Kulturhus in Helsingborg. Based on the theme of The Rakes Progress by William Hogarth, Jonas Lindvall created a surprising and visually stunning accompaniment to a world-class line-up of works from artists such as David Hockney, Paula Rego and James Northcote. Due to the success of Dekadens, Dunkers Kulturhus invited the architect back once again this year to create another setting for the exhibition Passion, which includes works from the likes of Claes Eklundh, Carl Fredrik Hill and Carl Larsson. The exhibition is open from June 2011 until January 2012.

Architecture
At present, he is working on several private residential projects, including the renovation of a 1916 villa in Landskrona with a separate, contemporary additional building; .a villa in Falsterbo and a villa in Frösakull; as well as the development of an impressive, private multi-housing project consisting of seven luxury homes in Limhamn.

Academic
In addition to his work as an architect and furniture designer Jonas, has been invited as a guest professor and critic and has lectured and held workshops in numerous architecture and design schools throughout Europe and Northern America. These include Universitè de Montreal in Canada, LTH in Lund and the Academy of Art and Design at the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland.
