From Trash to Treasure: Vipp Celebrates 20 Years of Artist Collaborations

Vipp designer waste bin in exhibition setting highlighting the transformation from functional object to artistic statement

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Vipp’s guest artist collaborations, a recurring event in Vipp’s history first initiated in Paris in 2005 during a charity auction and followed by an exhibition at the Louvre. To celebrate this special anniversary, Vipp is revisiting its archives of legendary designer bins and sending them on a travelling exhibition in Vipp stores throughout Europe.

Most bins have been one-offs sold on ‘Trash for Charity’-auctions in Paris, Lisbon, New York and Berlin benefitting organizations such as Food Bank for New York City, Diffa, and Oxfam. Others have been numbered limited-editions sold in concept stores like Colette in Paris or Smets in Brussels or via Vipp stores.

Responding to Vipp’s design ethos of longevity through quality materials and design aesthetics, each collaboration has resulted in a tool transformed into a unique object seen through the lens and creativity of the guest artist.

“There’s a certain appealing irony in transforming trash to art. Doubling as both and art piece and functional tool, the editions pay tribute to the artist as well as the product design itself and provide a highly contemporary twist to a historic design from the 30s.”
– KASPER EGELUND, CEO AND 3RD GENERATION VIPP OWNER.
