Pia Wallén was born in 1957 in Umeå, in northern Sweden. She moved to Stockholm in her early twenties and has lived and worked in the city ever since. In the mid-1980s she studied fashion design at Beckmans College of Design, graduating in 1983 — training that shaped the graphic, garment-like clarity still visible in her interior objects today.
The felt breakthrough
Wallén made her international breakthrough in the early 1990s with her own eponymous brand, built almost entirely around a single material: wool felt. In 1991 she introduced the Crux Blanket, built on the cross — a symbol of hope in Swedish folk art tradition, and a motif she has returned to throughout her career. She has cited the German artist Joseph Beuys as an early influence on the piece. A year later came the Slip In slipper, created in 1992 for Cappellini’s Progetto Oggetto, which turned a humble felt house shoe into a design object collected worldwide. The combination — traditional Swedish craft technique paired with bold, minimalist form — became her signature, extending from blankets and slippers into jewellery, bags and cushions.
Collaborations
Wallén’s cross motif and felt technique have carried into partnerships with established Scandinavian manufacturers. She has worked with Kasthall, most visibly through NK Interior’s “Together” design initiative, and with acoustic-panel maker Abstracta, where her cross pattern was reworked into the hanging sound absorbers Combo Cross and Combo Deluxe. She has also designed for the fashion retailer Arket, extending her felt and quilting techniques from interiors into clothing.
Museums and legacy
Wallén’s work is held in the permanent collections of Nationalmuseum and the Röhsska Museum in Sweden, and at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. More than three decades after the Crux Blanket’s debut, she continues to work from her Stockholm studio — recent output includes the Flacons collection, which carries her design language from felt into glass and ceramic.
