Taking the piss
This is Swedish manufacturer Danfo's new 'on street' urinal for Westminster City Council. The idea may come as no surprise to those who think that streets in the West End of London are already used for this purpose: indeed, the unit was a response to an SOS issued by the council earlier this year. Inspections revealed that the stonework of several landmark buildings was being eroded due to late night revellers relieving themselves against the walls.
The unit is self-flushing, and has two cubicles that provide partial enclosure for the user. Externally, the highly visible all stainless steel construction has a small footprint to fit on the narrow pavements of Westminster, and a sleek profile when closed. Danfo worked on the project with furniture and environments consultancy Lacock Gullam, which was formed in January by Sam Gullam when he left PSD Associates. The consultancy has now been commissioned directly by Westminster to work on the initial stages of a project reviewing waste management and street cleansing
