Lighting with Atmosphere
Finnish candleholders
The Studio, Alvar Aalto Museum
November 30, 2000 - February 25, 2001

Winter in Finland, the darkest time of year, gives us a splendid background for displaying candles and the atmosphere that candlelight brings. The winter exhibition at the Alvar Aalto Museum, Lighting with Atmosphere, presents Finnish candlesticks, candelabra and sconces. The exhibition is a unique collection of candleholders from the 1920s right up to the present day.

The exhibition includes familiar classics and the latest examples of contemporary design. The old guard of designers is represented by Alvar Aalto, Kaj Franck, Tapio Wirkkala and Bertel Gardberg. Contemporary designers invited to take part include Heikki Orvola, Timo Sarpaneva, Nanny Still and Kerttu Nurminen.

Warm light plays over the surfaces of various materials; the candleholders are in glass, metal, ceramics and wood. Some of the candleholders on show in the exhibition are unique one-off pieces, some are prototypes and some are everyday articles that have become familiar through being mass-produced by Iittala, Arabia and Fiskars.

The exhibition has been designed by Simo Heikkilä.
