For the first time since the 1950s, design in Sweden has come under an international spotlight. Almost everything around us has been designed and, as such, design provides a mirror for contemporary culture, and a vehicle for self expression. In Swedish Design Susanne Helgeson presents a survey of over 30 contemporary Swedish designers, from glass and textile designers to ceramic artists and furniture makers, providing a fascinating insight into current Scandinavian design philosophies. Exploring their thoughts, creative processes, and sources of inspiration it presents designers whose clear and consistent aim has been to take Swedish design forward and out beyond its borders.
Swedish Design is principally a book about design, but it also offers an exploration of the pleasure, knowledge, and inspiration behind design. Fourteen of Sweden's most interesting photographers provide a rich and varied documentation of the contemporary Swedish design scene, capturing the artists, their work, and their environment, plus a number of key producers and contributors.
An illustrated history surveys Swedish design from 1845 to the present while a glossary and directory provide further information on this growing industry. With text by design authority Susanne Helgeson, and illustrated with 1000 images, Swedish Design is ambitious and illuminating; it is the first major book on the subject, and a classic for all those interested in design and the strikingly innovative Swedish design scene in particular.
