Louise Campbell designs lamp
for Louis Poulsen
Lighting A/S
The launch of a highly unconventional new pendant simultaneously
marks the start of a new collaboration between the talented designer
Louise Campbell and Louis Poulsen Lighting. The idea behind the new
Campbell pendant is to reproduce some of the most rewarding experiences
that outdoor light can give us. Louise Campbell describes what inspired
her to design the luminaire:
The greatest contrast between natural and artificial
lighting comes from the fact that there is only one single source of
natural light, and we never look at that directly. Our sense of light
is governed by countless naturally created layers that filter and reflect
light before it reaches us. A stroll through the woods is a perfect
example. We see the layers, the depth, the height, all the intermediate
spaces. That special atmosphere cannot be reproduced, and a single light
source cannot satisfactorily illuminate an interior space. There simply
isnt enough distance. We can, however, capture the essence
a light source in a multi-layered pendant creates an interplay that
highlights the spaces and brings them into focus. The light is filtered
in a way that brings out the mellowness of natural light.
The designers intentions are crystallised in the
finished pendant, and the result is a lamp that creates an intense ambience.
The Campbell pendant has two equidistant shades of blown, clear glass
with frosted sandblasted stripes. The shades cause the light rays passing
through to change direction. The frosted stripes further enhance the
unique sense of depth as well as shielding glare from the light source.
The sandblasted stripes add a dramatic lighting effect, and the luminaire
gives off diffuse light.
The outer and inner shades of the Campbell pendant are
made from blown sandblasted glass, with connecting pieces and top cap
fixture of plastic and metal. The pendant is 275mm in diameter and 365mm
high. It can be fitted with various light sources such as a Concentra
60W E 27 incandescent lamp or, alternatively, a 13W energy-saving light
bulb.
The Campbell pendant has been designed with the private
market in mind and will add a striking dimension to many rooms in the
home. In the professional market, the pendant can be used to advantage
in restaurants, hotels, meeting and conference rooms and reception areas.
Visitors to this years Scandinavian Furniture
Fair in the Bella Center will have the opportunity of a firsthand look
at other designs by Louise Campbell. The Louis Poulsen Lighting stand
will feature a number of her festive, surprising and occasionally offbeat
design sketches for new lamps. All these spanking new ideas are intriguing,
elegant, wide-ranging and deeply original.
The Campbell pendant will be available in autumn 2004.
A decision has not yet been made about which of the other design proposals
will be developed as part of Louis Poulsens standard lighting
range.
Louise Campbell (born 1970) graduated from the Danish
School of Design in 1995 and has since worked as a freelance designer
on a broad range of design projects. She has taken part in numerous
exhibitions and received several grants and awards for her innovative
solutions.

Io a new ceiling and wall fixture
Io is a new ceiling and wall fixture developed by the
designers Merete Christensen and Bo Seedorff. The design duo also designed
the Q fixture, and based both fixtures on the circular T-R16 fluorescent
lamp. The name Io stems from one of Jupiters moons, and the association
derives from the glowing disk.
The
key idea of Io is to interlace two plastic discs, thus shielding the
light source effectively. Io appears as a circular, simplistic fixture,
illuminating either wall or ceiling discreetly.
Io can be combined with a design element a decorative
system of rings which changes the character of the fixture. The
rings are mounted directly onto the polycarbonate diffuser and are available
in anodised aluminium, matt brass, copper or stainless steel. The decor
system adds even more uses to Io and makes it extremely suitable in
buildings such as institutions where this small accessory results in
a decorative and practical fixture.
Io is designed with a moulded, shock-resistant polycarbonate
shade, and its simplistic design and minimal height one of the
lowest on the market make the fixture perfect for mounting in
stairways, basements, restrooms, kitchens, canteens and other areas
needing solid and reliable construction. Io for wall mounting is IP
44 classified for both indoor and outdoor use, and emergency lights
can be integrated into the fixture. Io is available in two sizes Ø
320mm and Ø 400mm. Ø 320mm is available with 1x22W T-R16.
Ø 400mm is available with 1x40W T-R16 w/wo dimmer.

Popular pendant in new materials
Louis Poulsen Lighting A/S is launching three new versions
of its well-known Toldbod glass pendant, first introduced in 2001 and
very favourably received by the market. The latest family member, the
Toldbod Metal pendant, will be available in three different materials
cast aluminium, cast brass, and cast burnished brass.
The design of the three metal versions is as simple
and logical as their glass predecessor. The Toldbod Metal pendant is
a refreshing contrast to the cool mini-malism that has influenced global
design for several years. The choice of materials and finish bring a
new textural dimension to the three latest pendants, opening up opportunities
for more areas of application.
The Toldbod Metal pendant is ideal for use in private
homes, for example, in kitch-ens and other work spaces. In the professional
market, the pendants will be
eminently suitable in settings such as reception areas,
counters and bars in hotels and restaurants.
The Toldbod Metal pendant measures 120mm in diameter
and is fitted with a 230V pin-type halogen lamp, max. 40W. The fixture
comes with a three-meter cable.
The Toldbod Metal pendant will be available in September
2004.
